How to measure

  • Measure across the outside of the pipe with a caliper or an adjustable wrench and a ruler.
  • Do not trust the size printed on plastic pipe. A pipe sold as 1-1/2 inch PVC measures about 1.9 inches across.
  • Copper water tube is named 1/8 inch under what it measures: 1/2 inch tube is 5/8 across.
  • If your pipe sits on a limit, take the next tool up.

What the chart leaves out

  • Wall thickness. The wheel cutters take walls under 0.1 inch.
  • Material beyond the two groups. Steel pipe and conduit need other tools.
  • Space to work. A long-handled cutter needs room to swing.
